Penang sees improvement in STPM 2023 academic average

GEORGE TOWN: Penang's Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) 2023 cumulative grade point average (CGPA) has shown an increase.

State Education Department deputy director (learning sector) Roland @ Rozaidi Abu Hassan said the 2023 CGPA was 2.9, up from 2.86 in 2022.

"It is increasing by the year and we hope to reach 3.0 the next time around.

"This time 15 out of the 25 schools that offer STPM in the state achieved a 100% passing rate.

"A total of 1,743 students who sat for the STPM exam and 1,727 qualified for the certificate, meaning they fully passed or obtained a partial pass.

"Of those who obtained certificates, 70 showed excellent performance with a 4.0 CGPA," he told a press conference to announce the results here on Tuesday (July 23).

He said in 2022, 16 schools achieved a 100% passing rate with 73 students scoring straight As, but this year's percentages were better as there were fewer students.

"In 2022 we had 2,004 STPM candidates compared to 1,727.

"This means the average of those who have scored a 4.0 CGPA went up from 3.63% in 2022 to 4.1% last year," he said, extending his congratulations to the top scorers.

"I am convinced that their success is the result of hard work and careful planning involving the students, parents, teachers, school administrators and others who helped them," he added.
