PUTRAJAYA: Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun (pic) has been appointed as the new chairman of the Election Commission (EC).
Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali, in a statement yesterday, said the appointment received the consent of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia.
Ramlan’s appointment, effective yesterday, was in line with Article 114(1) of the Federal Constitution, reported Bernama.
The former Rural and Regional Development Ministry secretary-general replaces Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh in the role.
Ramlan, 60, had been in the public service for 28 years, serving several ministries and departments.
He holds a master’s degree in land resource management from Universiti Putra Malaysia, and a bachelor’s degree in housing and building planning from Universiti Sains Malaysia.
He also has a diploma in public administration from the National Institute of Public Administration.
Ramlan’s predeccessor Abdul Ghani had retired as EC chairman after four years at the helm.
His compulsory retirement took effect on May 9.
Abdul Ghani held the position from August 2020.
