JOHOR BARU: A 24-hour mechanical engineering lecture held non-stop and broadcast live by 60 lecturers has earned Universiti Teknologi Malaysia a spot in the record books.

The university’s mechanical engineering faculty dean Assoc Prof Dr Zaini Ahmad said they made it into the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) after achieving the feat at about 9am yesterday.

“We kickstarted the lecture at 9am on Tuesday and it went on continuously for 24 hours until 9am the next day.

“The lecture was broadcast live online with viewers tuning in from all around the world,” he told a press conference after receiving the certificate from MBOR.

He said the lecture garnered some 1,000 viewers including from the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Egypt, Indonesia, Thailand and Nigeria.

“Even in the wee hours of the morning, we still had audience members online from different time zones. This was also a way for us to highlight the breadth of knowledge within our faculty and our ability to provide flexible and hybrid lectures.

“Through this effort, we also hope to promote mechanical engineering programmes and science, technology, engineering and mathematics subjects to all, including those who have just received their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia results,” he said.

Dr Zaini said there were a handful of students who physically attended the lecture, which was organised in conjunction with the faculty’s Mechanical Open Day and Exhibition 2024.

Programme director Dr Wong Keng Yinn said the lecture will still be made available online, including on social media.

He said five IT staff members provided technical support throughout the record-breaking lecture.
