Trio face gallows after being caught with 54g of meth


SIBU: Three men are facing the death sentence after being caught in possession of 60.25g of drugs on Wednesday (May 15).

Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Zulkipli Suhaili said the suspects, aged between 25 and 57, were detained at about 11.45am at a homestay facility in Jalan Seladah.

"The police team found 54.75g of methamphetamine and 20 pills suspected to be Erimin 5, weighing 5.5g," he said here on Thursday (May 16).

The value of the seized drugs was estimated at RM6,422.50, he said, adding that police also impounded a vehicle worth RM80,000.

The suspects' urine tests came back positive for methamphetamine/amphetamine, he added.

ACP Zulkipli said the three suspects had previous drug offences on their records and had been remanded for seven days to assist the investigation under Sections 39B and 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Section 39B, for trafficking in dangerous drugs, carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction for possessing more than 50g of methamphetamine.

Section 15(1)(a) for self-administering dangerous drugs provides for a fine of not more than RM5,000 and jail of not more than two years, or both, upon conviction.

Convicted offenders also face a further two years of police supervision under Section 38B of the same Act.
