Heavy rain in Penang causes flash floods in parts of Air Itam

PETALING JAYA: Parts of Penang Island are experiencing flash floods due to heavy rain this evening.

Videos on social media showed parts of the Thean Tek Highway in Air Itam, submerged in ankle-deep water.

The Penang City Council (MBPP) advised the public to be careful while travelling on the road.

"The public can still use the route, but they are advised to be careful and stay focused.

"The MBPP's Skuad Pantas has been deployed in the area to be prepared for any emergency," it said in a statement at about 9:50pm on Thursday (May 16)

In another post, MBPP reported that a boulder had fallen on Jalan Tun Sardon in Bukit Baru because of the rain at about 10.50pm.

It said that while the road is still accessible, MBPP advises road users to exercise caution.

The council also informed the public to report any fallen trees, landslides or emergencies through the MBPP Hotline at 04-263 7000/ 04-263 7637 or via WhatsApp (016-2004082).

There had been no reports of injuries or deaths.
