MACC getting info from German authorities on seized supercars

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is getting more information on the four Bugatti Veyron supercars seized in Munich, Germany in connection with a 1Malaysia Development Board (1MBD) investigation.

MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said they had already been in touch with German authorities.

"On Oct 26, 2022, MACC sent a request for information on the purchase of the luxury vehicles using 1MDB bonds.

"We also sent an updated request to get the latest information from German authorities," he said in a statement on Sunday (April 28).

Azam also said MACC had been investigating the issue since 2020.

"It started when MACC sent a mutual legal assistance request to Switzerland for information on frozen assets connected to 1MDB in November 2020.

"This was followed by a joint meeting in 2021 with the office of the Switzerland Attorney General on 50 luxury cars linked to the 1MDB investigation," he said.

It was reported that four special edition Bugatti Veyron supercars were seized by German police in Munich earlier this week.

According to German newspaper "Bild" the supercars were seized from a private storage facility.

They were of the Rembrandt, Black Bess, Jean-Pierre Wimille and Meo Constantini versions, each worth about US$3mil (RM14.3mil).

It added that the cars were parked in storage for the Motorworld Munich exhibition.
