Firms ink deal for Penang Hill cable car project


GEORGE TOWN: Local rail industry player Hartasuma Sdn Bhd has signed a contract with Doppelmayr Seilbahnen GmbH of Austria for the Penang Hill cable car project.

The signing ceremony took place at Doppelmayr's headquarters in Wolfurt, Austria on Thursday (April 25) between Doppelmayr Holding SE chairman Michael Doppelmayr and Hartasuma group executive director Tan Sri Ravindran Menon.

Doppelmayr was a global market leader in the field of ropeway engineering.

"(The ceremony) was witnessed by members of the Penang delegation, including state infrastructure and transport committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari and tourism and creative economy committee chairman Wong Hon Wai," Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) said in a statement on Friday (April 26).

The delegation later made technical visits to Doppelmayr, Garaventa and major component suppliers for the cable car system, it read.

The cable car project was awarded to Hartasuma through a public-private partnership on a design, finance, operate and transfer basis in December 2022, with Doppelmayr providing the cable car system.
