Mum, baby killed in Kota Tinggi car-tanker collision


KOTA TINGGI: A mother and her three-month-old baby girl were killed after the car they were travelling in was involved in a collision with an oil tanker at Jalan Tanjung Balau-Bandar Penawar near Taman Sri Penawar.

A Bandar Penawar Fire and Rescue Station spokesman said Najwa Nurshahira Kamaruzaman, 28, and Felkah Nurnadeera Muhammad Fahmy, who were the front-seat passengers, were killed on the spot in the accident on Friday.

“The mother and baby were found pinned to the seat,” said the spokesman.

He said the 30-year-old driver of the car, who is the woman’s husband, and their two other children, aged eight and five, sustained minor injuries, while the 34-year-old lorry driver escaped unhurt.

Eight firemen rushed to the scene upon receiving a call at 1.30pm, Bernama reported.

Meanwhile, in Alor Setar, an elderly woman aged 85 and her son, 55, died in a road accident on Jalan Permatang Kerat Telunjuk near Bandar Baharu.

Bandar Baharu district police chief DSP Azmi Mokhtar, said both victims died at the scene of the accident, which occurred around 8pm on Friday.

Four other passengers in the vehicle suffered minor injuries, Bernama reported.

“Investigations revealed that the vehicle driven by the male victim, along with five other passengers, including his mother, was travelling from Serdang to Bandar Baharu.”

“The vehicle is believed to have entered the opposite lane and grazed the right side of a lorry driven by a 43-year-old man before veering off the road to the left,” DSP Azmi said in a statement.

“The investigation is ongoing under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
