Sub-contractor charged over accident that killed two brothers

SUNGAI SIPUT: A sub-contractor has pleaded not guilty to two charges of reckless driving that caused the deaths of two brothers here.

Lee Kin Peng, 52, from Salak Utara, claimed trial after being read the charges under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act before magistrate Nurul Asyifa Redzuan here yesterday.

He is accused of having committed the offences that caused the deaths of Ahmad Zuhal Norazlan, 17, and his brother Ahmad Marikh, 13, at KM38 of Jalan Ipoh-Kuala Kangsar on April 5 between 7am and 7.15am.

He faces up to 10 years in jail and a maximum fine of RM50,000, upon conviction. He will also not be eligible to hold a driver’s licence for five years if found guilty.

Nurul Asyifa set bail at RM6,000 for both charges and ordered Lee to report to the nearest station once a month until the completion of the case.

Lee was also ordered to surrender his passport and not to disturb the witnesses.

Earlier, deputy public prosecutor S. Vitthiyeswary asked the court to set RM10,000 bail for each charge and for this to be paid only by Lee’s family member.

However, lawyer S. Morgan requested bail to be set at RM5,000 for both charges.

Morgan said his client, who is married with three school-going children, earned about RM2,000 a month.

Mention for the case has been set on June 11.
