Public can still get their unclaimed money even after 15-year period lapses

PETALING JAYA: Unclaimed money can still be returned to owners even after the 15-year period has lapsed, says the Accountant-General's Department.

"The lapsed period will have no effect for those with unclaimed money and want to claim it.

"The government will still make payments to requesters even if the money has been transferred to the Consolidated Revenue Account," the department said in a statement to The Star on Saturday (March 16).

The department added that as of February 2024, there was RM15.4bil in unclaimed money and RM3.8bil in total payouts.

The current total of unclaimed money stands at RM11.6bil.

The department also warned the public that the Finance Ministry has never appointed any third party, companies or agents to carry out unclaimed money applications.

The public may check their status and claim their money if available through the eGumis portal at https://egumis.anm.gov.my/ or at any Accountant-General's Department counter nationwide.

Currently, all unclaimed money by individuals or companies are transferred to a Consolidated Trust Account where it will be held for 15 years before it is channeled to the Consolidated Revenue Account.

However, on Monday (March 11), the government proposed to shorten the 15-year lapse period to 10 years.
