KOTA KINABALU: Malaysians abroad can help promote products of the country’s small and medium enterprises (SME) by acting as unofficial ambassadors, says the Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister.

Datuk Ewon Benedick (pic) said there are over 1.1 million SME companies nationwide, most of them micro-entrepreneurs, and some 16,000 cooperatives with over 7 million members operating.

“Malaysians in Germany and abroad can help these SMEs by being ambassadors, and we can all do our part to promote and introduce local products to foreigners, wherever you may be,” he said.

He said this during a meet-the-people event with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Malaysians in Germany on Tuesday (March 12).

Benedick said Malaysia has many local products and services to offer, and it would be a waste if they were not introduced to other parts of the world.

He said it did not matter if these Malaysians were abroad for studies or work; they could be the bridge to bringing local products to the international market.

“I hope SMEs in Malaysia would seize every opportunity they can to promote their products and get investments going,” Benedick said.

During the visit to Germany, several ministry agencies would participate in the SME Future Day, which starts Wednesday (March 13) and is organised by the German SME association (BVMW).

Six companies from Malaysia would be promoting their products and services in Germany during this event.
