Dr Wee: MCA can win back public support

KUALA LUMPUR: The rollback on a 8% tax on traditional and complementary medicine (T&CM) is an example of how MCA can win back public support by proving that it is party that can be relied on, says party president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

MCA’s successful advocacy had stopped the government from imposing an 8% service tax on T&CM services which would have significantly impacted the Chinese community.

“Our committees, bureaus, and state liaison committees must play their roles to address the difficulties faced by the people and businesses,” he said in his speech at the party’s 75th anniversary celebration yesterday.

“All MPs and assemblymen must work harder to enhance the party’s image and reliability.”

The primary focus, Dr Wee added, was on winning back public support by intensively implementing plans formulated by the new leadership, enhancing party performance at all levels, and building a fresh and politically competent image.

MCA’s stand on the T&CM tax was an example of how the party had monitored the government’s performance and spoke out for the people although it is a member of the administration.

“Even while it is a member of the government, MCA has consistently stood firm and adhered to its principles, while maintaining an open attitude.

“As long as there is consensus in political ideology and shared goals, with universal values as the bottom line, we can work towards the common goal of building a better Malaysia,” said Dr Wee, who is also Ayer Hitam MP.

He stressed that MCA is ready to cooperate with any party as long as there is consensus and that it will continue strengthening the Barisan Nasional coalition of which it is a member.

“Although the current political scenario is challenging for Barisan, it presents an opportunity for introspection and a revitalisation of the coalition’s spirit,” he added.

“Today’s political situation makes it even clearer that only the cooperation model and governance philosophy of Barisan is most suitable for Malaysia, a country of diverse races, religions and cultures.”

He said the coalition needs to identify weaknesses and shortcomings while strengthening the cooperation mechanisms between component parties, and enhancing its election machinery at all levels to prepare for the next general election.

“All component parties and leaders of Barisan must prioritise the interests and future of Barisan to ensure wins in the next general election and a return to the political mainstream,” he added.
