KOTA KINABALU: An elderly man was sentenced to three months in jail and fined RM5,000 for providing false information for another person to apply for the MyKad.
Bakri Sakka, 70, was accused of acting as a father and a guarantor for someone known as “Munar Bakri” to register for a MyKad at the National Registration Department in Sandakan.
He committed the offence at 4.39pm on Sept 9, 2022.
He was arrested at around 1.30pm on March 4, 2024, in a meeting room at Wisma Persekutuan Sandakan.
When charged at the Magistrate’s Court, he pleaded guilty to the offence and asked for a lenient sentence.
His lawyer, Mohd Nazri Zikiri, pleaded for a lighter sentence, citing his age, health, and the fact that it was his first offence.
Magistrate Nur Faezah Jafry ordered Bakri to serve a three-month jail sentence from the date of his charge (March 8) and pay a RM5,000 fine or face an additional five months imprisonment.
Bakri paid the fine.
In a separate courtroom, the Mykad applicant “Munar”, an IMM13 document holder whose real name is Hasanuddin Sande, was sentenced to 12 months in jail and fined RM7,500 for providing fake information.
IMM13 is one of the documents issued by Malaysian Immigration to citizens of the Philippines with refugee status.
The 38-year-old who was nabbed at the same time and place as Bakri, pleaded guilty to the charge read to him.
Magistrate Mohammad Azeem Mohd Ridzo meted the sentence after considering the seriousness of the case and instructed that he be referred to the Immigration Department upon completion of his jail sentence.
Hasanuddin paid his fine.
