Indonesian maid lies about being abused in order to go home

JOHOR BARU: In a desperate bid to return home, an Indonesian maid made up a story about being abused by her employer.

She posted a video on social media claiming that she was tortured, and the clip caught the attention of the police.

Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat said police received a screenshot of the clip, which has gone viral on social media, at around 10.30am on Tuesday (Feb 20).

“(In the video), an Indonesian woman claims to have been abused by her employer while working as a cleaner and a helper at a nursing home here.

“Based on the clip, police and representatives from the Consulate General of The Republic of Indonesia in Johor Baru stepped in to get further information,” he said in a statement on Wednesday (Feb 21).

ACP Raub said they found no evidence of abuse after interviewing the maid and the employer.

“The reason the woman did such a thing is that she wanted to go home," he said, adding that the maid had been handed over to the consulate general.

ACP Raub urged the public to verify the authenticity of any videos they received before posting or forwarding them.

He warned that strict action could be taken against anyone found spreading fake content.
