Fatalities drop while fines rise

KUALA LUMPUR: There was a drop in accident fatalities but almost double the traffic summonses issued during Ops Selamat in conjunction with Chinese New Year.

Federal Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director Comm Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri said there were nine fewer fatalities, while fatal accidents had reduced by one case, compared to Ops Selamat 19 last year.

According to police data, 74% of the total 67 deaths involved motorcyclists and pillion riders.

“Cases that led to serious injuries have also dropped this year to 40 cases compared to the recorded 52 cases last year,” he said during the Ops Selamat 21 closing ceremony at the Police Training Centre here.

He added that 201,840 summonses were issued throughout the six-day operation which ended on Feb 13.

This was a 96% or 98,726 summons increase when compared to the 2023 Chinese New Year period.

Comm Mohd Azman said police had identified 18 hotspots and 46 “blackspots” throughout main highways during the operational period.
