PUTRAJAYA: A Tanzanian woman has been rescued by immigration officers in an anti-human trafficking operation in Kuala Lumpur.
Immigration Department director-general Datuk Ruslin Jusoh said the 29-year-old was taken into custody during an operation that began at about 4.30pm on Monday.
He said the woman was believed to be a victim of human trafficking and exploited as a sex worker, adding that she was brought into the country by a syndicate made up of Tanzanian nationals.
“The operation was conducted based on information from the Tanzanian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur,” Ruslin said in a statement yesterday.
He said the operation was carried out by the department’s Intelligence Operations Unit, Prevention Division of Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants, and Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act.
Ruslin said the woman was rescued and placed in a shelter under the interim protection order.
