‘ICJ’s ruling step in right direction’

Taking the right steps: Mohamad said the ICJ’s ruling was an important step in “safeguarding humanity and the sanctity of international law”.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will continue to monitor and use all available channels to condemn the attacks by Israel on the Palestinians, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He said the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) decision on Friday about the crisis in Gaza was a clear message that the atrocities must end.

“According to our brothers and sisters in Palestine, it (the ICJ’s decision) did not completely provide (the end of the war) but the decision, however, is a clear stance by the ICJ that it is condemning such an attack.

“The decision by ICJ is a clear call for humanitarian aid to be expedited (for the Palestinians),” he said.

Malaysia would continue to do whatever it takes to support (the people of Palestine),” he told reporters yesterday.

On Friday, the ICJ, which is the top United Nations court, ordered six provisional measures including for Israel to prevent the commission of genocide in Gaza, in accordance with its obligations under the Genocide Convention.

It also ordered Israel to ensure with immediate effect that its military did not commit any acts of genocide.

The ICJ also ruled that Israel must enable the provision of basic services and humanitarian assistance to address the adverse conditions of life in Gaza.

Israel must also prevent the destruction and ensure the preservation of evidence related to allegations of genocide and submit a report to the ICJ on all measures taken to give effect to the order within one month.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said in a statement yesterday that Malaysia is “vindicated” following the decision by the ICJ in the case initiated by South Africa against Israel over the application of the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.

“Malaysia hails the court decision as an important and defining step in safeguarding humanity and the sanctity of international law,” he said,

He said Malaysia viewed the landmark decision as a step in the right direction towards ending the hostilities in Gaza, which currently stands as the most severe humanitarian crisis since World War II.

The court ruling meant that Malaysia had been “vindicated” in its call for Israel to be held accountable for the atrocities, crimes against humanity and genocide committed on the Palestinians in the Gaza strip, he said .

“In upholding the ICJ’s ruling, Malaysia urges the international community to boldly and decisively ensure Israel compliance with the six provisional measures ordered by the court.”

“Malaysia looks forward to the next proceedings of the ICJ which will examine the case of genocide against Israel, in its continuous support for South Africa’s application,” he added.

He said that Malaysia reiterated its call for Palestine to be admitted as a full member state of the United Nations, and to recognise its borders based on the pre-1967 one, which places East Jerusalem as the nation’s capital.
