KUALA LUMPUR: MCA's priority is to stand up for the people and solve their problems, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

The MCA president said the party would also play a check and balance role while continuing to speak up for the Chinese community.

"We hope leaders and members from Chinese guilds and associations will continue to support MCA.

"From being the ruling party, to the Opposition party, to now supporting the unity government, we are adapting.

“We thank Chinese community leaders for their support for MCA all these years," he said during the Chinese New Year dinner and party with veterans and leaders of Chinese guilds and associations on Tuesday (Jan 23).

Dr Wee said as tradition, MCA would hold its Chinese New Year open house at Dewan San Choon, Wisma MCA.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi will be attending the celebration on Feb 10.

Dr Wee also said the event with party veterans and leaders of Chinese guilds and associations was significant after a three-year hiatus.

"MCA was established in 1949, with the encouragement of the business community. Therefore, MCA cannot be separated from the Chinese society. That is why, during Chinese New Year, it is our tradition to celebrate on a large scale.

"MCA and the leaders of Chinese guilds and associations are our greatest blessings," he said.

Also present at the event were Dr Wee’s wife Datin Seri Jessica Lim, MCA deputy president Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon, secretary-general Datuk Chong Sin Woon, vice-presidents Datuk Lim Ban Hong, Datuk Tan Teik Cheng, Datuk Seri Dr Wee Jeck Seng and Datuk Lawrence Low Ah Keong, as well as Wanita MCA chairman Wong You Fong and MCA Youth chief Ling Tian Soon.

Former MCA president Tan Sri Liow Tiong Lai, Star Media Group advisor and Bernama chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai, Star Media Group chief content officer Datin Paduka Esther Ng, United Chinese School Committees' Association of Malaysia (Dong Zong) president Tan Tai Kim, Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM) president Tan Sri Low Kian Chuan, former Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia (Hua Zong) president Tan Sri Pheng Yin Huah, Educationist group United Chinese School Teachers’ Association (Jiao Zong) president Cheah Lek Aee and his wife were also in attendance.
