Rain not dampening entrepreneurs’ carnival joy

PUTRAJAYA: Various activities and products await visitors at the 2023 Karnival Usahawan Desa @Putrajaya where over 1,000 booths have been set up.

Up to 1,000 local entrepreneurs are taking part in the carnival, offering products and services such as textiles, handicraft, health and cosmetics, esports, fashion, agricultural goods as well as food and beverages.

Among the activities lined up are a free bicycle service, batik colouring demonstrations and a cake decoration contest.

Rempeyek stall owner Arif Mat Arizan said the carnival helped his small business gain traction.

Hailing from Pokok Sena in Kedah, Arif said this was his first time having a booth at carnival, although his in-laws had previously taken part.

“I must say that the reception is overwhelmingly good. Even when it’s raining, people come in droves,” he said.

Arif hopes that the carnival will go to Kedah.

“That will help small businesses such as ours,” he said.

Izzahidah Zulkefli said she had been coming to the carnival for the past few years with her sisters, Izzarifah and Izzakirah, describing it as a “yearly sisters’ affair” for them.

“However, unlike previous years when it was only the three of us, this time, there are five of us as my sister Izzakirah has married and has a baby now,” she said.

In his speech, Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, also the Deputy Prime Minister, said the government was targeting RM10mil worth of sales and one million visitors at the five-day carnival.

“It is the government’s desire to form a strong entrepreneurial spirit... among as many Malaysians as possible.

His speech was read out by his deputy Datuk Rubiah Wang.

The carnival, from 10am to 10pm at Anjung Floria, ends today.
