Nirvana Asia sponsors subscriptions to aid students’ English, general knowledge

PETALING JAYA: Getting students to master English and keep abreast of current affairs are reasons why Datuk Reeno Kong has pledged RM30,000 to sponsor subscriptions for The Star’s ePaper.

The Nirvana Asia Group executive director hopes students will improve their English and general knowledge.

“These days, many students don’t read. They spend too much time on online entertainment and games.

“Compared with their parents, their English proficiency is low.

“I hope they will use this ePaper subscription and start reading,” he said when presenting the sponsorship at Menara Star here yesterday.

Kong said students would certainly find something they like in the robust ePaper.

“There are many sections in the ePaper, such as news, sports and entertainment.

“I’m sure they can find something that interests them,” he added.

Also present were Star Media Group chief executive officer Alex Yeow and corporate office special officer Loo Phan Kooi.

Nirvana Asia’s sponsorship would go to the Students Sponsorship Programme, where students from selected universities, colleges and secondary schools will get a free subscription to The Star ePaper.

Being in the bereavement business that spans several countries, Kong said mastering English was important.

“Our national language Bahasa Malaysia and mother tongue are equally important.

“But it is always an advantage to master an additional language, especially English, the global language,” he said.

Kong also called on schoolteachers and lecturers from higher learning institutions to cultivate a love for reading, so that they can in turn inspire their students to do so.

“That way, they will certainly inspire their students to pick up more reading materials.

“I also hope they will use The Star ePaper in teaching, so as to encourage their students to read the newspaper,” he said.
