GEORGE TOWN: The police are committed to investigating the alleged beating of a detainee by two policemen in Klang, says Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain.
"We have opened an investigation into it and are committed to carrying it out in a competent manner.
“When the investigation is complete, we will send it to the Attorney General’s Chambers for recommendations.
“We will be transparent and fair when investigating this matter,” he told reporters during a press conference after officiating at the 76th Marine Police Day celebration at the marine police base in Batu Uban, Penang on Thursday (Oct 12).
Razarudin was commenting on a question about an incident where a suspected drug dealer was beaten while in police custody.
A video of the alleged incident has been circulated through the Telegram mobile phone app.
When asked on the progress of the investigation into Roger Ng, Razarudin said it has only been two days (since they began the investigations) and they needed more time before statements could be made.
"Give us a chance to investigate.
"There is no fixed time limit, we will investigate until we are satisfied.
"Even if there is progress we cannot speak yet.
"This case involves the people's and the government's money.
"We will hold press conferences from time to time to provide updates," the IGP said.
He then reiterated that they have no time frame for how long the former Goldman Sachs banker can be held in the country for Malaysia’s investigation into the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal.
Ng is currently being investigated under Section 409 of the Penal Code and Section 4(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing Act (Amlatfa).
Back in March in New York, Ng was sentenced to 10 years’ jail – 11 months after he was found guilty of helping his former Goldman boss Tim Leissner embezzle money from 1MDB, launder the proceeds and bribe government officials.
