KUALA LUMPUR: PETRONAS has launched a private 5G network to optimise its internal operations, the first of its kind in Malaysia.

The network is currently being used at its PETRONAS Regasification Terminal Sungai Udang (RGTSU) in Melaka.

Speaking at the launch on Friday (Oct 6), Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the deployment of the Petronas 5G Private Network sets the stage for a dynamic partnership between the government, the private sector and academia.

“As we embark on this transformative journey, it is crucial to acknowledge the integral role cutting-edge technologies play, 5G's fast connectivity, low latency and capacity to handle massive data flows will empower our industries to innovate, compete and excel on a global scale,” he added.

PETRONAS project delivery and technology vice-president Datuk Bacho Pilong said the deployment of the 5G private network at RGTSU has enhanced operational efficiency and safety while supporting its business and sustainability targets.

“Our strategic adoption of 5G technology sets us ahead in the energy industry. By combining 5G with the Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence and automation, we are putting PETRONAS as among the leaders in the global technological race.

“It also ensured that we meet the demands of supplying safe, reliable, cost-optimised and emission-abated energy solutions for Malaysia and our customers globally,” he said.

As of September, Malaysia's commercial 5G network coverage in populated areas stands at 70.2%, with 5G subscriptions totalling 2.49 million, translating to 7.4% penetration rate.

The current figures shows that the country is on track to achieve 80% of 5G network coverage in populated areas by year end.

Also present at the event was Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil.
