SIBU: Four men working as debt collectors for an unlicensed moneylender or Ah Long have been arrested.

“A crime prevention patrol team intercepted a Proton Wira at around 8.50pm in Jalan Lada with three local men, aged between 20 and 40 inside,” said Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri yesterday.

Speaking at a press conference, he said both the suspects were taken to the police station for further investigation.

He said the items seized included two bottles containing red liquid, a lock chain, three phones and two pieces of paper with threatening notes in a sling bag.

“The suspects admitted to being employed as debt collectors for an Ah Long named Akmal and paid RM300 for each task.

“These included delivering threatening notes and splashing paint on the homes of debtors, who failed to repay their loans applied through Facebook,” he said.

Mohd Azman said the fourth suspect was detained later.

“With the arrests, police have solved at least nine cases involving criminal threats and acts of mischief within the Sibu district,” he said.

He also advised the public not to apply for loans from unlicensed or online moneylenders.

Those with information about criminal activities, are advised to contact the nearest police station or the Sibu IPD operations room at 084-364 373.
