Elderly bachelor dies in home fire

KOTA KINABALU: The charred remains of an elderly bachelor was found in a razed village home in Kg Babagon, Penampang, yesterday morning.

The victim, identified as Liew Ah Ngou Liew Sun, 68, lived alone in the house and had trouble moving around as he was a stroke patient.

Penampang Fire Station chief Zeno Tinggalan said given the victim’s health condition and that he was living alone, it would have been difficult for him to escape the burning structure.

On the incident, he said firemen received a distress call around 9am and rushed to the scene. “We received a call from who we believe was the neighbour. When the firemen arrived, the whole house was engulfed in flames,” he said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, he said, adding there were no other casualties.

Penampang OCPD Supt Sammy Newton said there were no signs of foul play, and they have classified the case as sudden death.

He urged the public to refrain from circulating photos of the deceased and to be sensitive to the feelings of his family.
