Simpang Jeram by-election: One candidate has so far paid deposit, says Johor EC

JOHOR BARU: One individual has paid the deposit to stand as a candidate in the Simpang Jeram by-election, says the Johor Election Commission.

Its director Nor Nekman Jaimon said so far, eight nomination forms have been sold for the Pulai parliamentary and Simpang Jeram by-elections.

“Two of the nomination forms involved Pulai while the remaining six were for Simpang Jeram. One individual has also paid the deposit for the state seat,” he said when met during a briefing with the media at the Johor Tourism Information Centre here on Friday (Aug 18).

Nor Nekman however declined to elaborate on the individual who had paid the deposit, adding that nomination forms were still available until nomination day for the by-elections.

The deposit to stand as a candidate in a parliamentary seat is RM10,000 while for a state seat, it is RM5,000.

Nor Nekman also said as of July 23, a total of 166,653 individuals in the Pulai parliamentary constituency were eligible to vote while there are 40,3769 eligible voters in Simpang Jeram.

“There will be 49 polling stations for Pulai and 14 polling stations for Simpang Jeram.

“Preparations for the two by-elections are at 80%. We will be fully prepared in a few days' time,” he added.

He said a total of 2,674 EC officers and staff would be involved in the Pulai polls.

Another 674 officers and staff would be involved in the Simpang Jeram by-election.

Nomination day has been set for Aug 26.

Polling will be on Sept 9 while early voting on Sept 5.

Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub, who was the elected representative for both seats, died on July 23 due to a brain haemorrhage. He was 61.

Salahuddin was Amanah deputy president and had served as the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister.
