KUALA LUMPUR: The United Kingdom will look to deepen its ties with Malaysia in tackling both global and regional issues, says its High Commissioner-designate to Malaysia, Ailsa Terry (pic).
She pledged to also strengthen trade and cooperation between the two countries during her tenure.
“This is an exciting time for both the United Kingdom and Malaysia as we build a modern partnership based around our many shared interests. I have a brilliant team to work with.
“Building on the strong connections between our people together with our shared history and values as fellow Commonwealth members, I believe there is huge potential for the United Kingdom and Malaysia to work more closely together to boost our trade, education and tech relationship while also tackling the climate emergency and upholding the international rules-based system.
“There are also opportunities to strengthen our defence partnership including through the Five Power Defence Arrangements (FPDA). I am thrilled to be in Malaysia,” she said in a statement yesterday.
Prior to her posting here, Terry was director of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office’s (FCDO) inaugural Sanctions Directorate, which she established as part of the country’s response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
She has also been posted to Pakistan and the UK Mission to the European Union (EU) in Brussels, and served as political adviser to the EU Special Representative to Afghanistan in 2011.
Terry, who succeeds Charles Hay here, is expected to present her credentials to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong later this month.
