Getting tech giants to pay their dues

PUTRAJAYA: A bill related to the return of advertising expenditure from tech platforms to the media organisations whose content they use will be drafted by the Communications and Digital Ministry, says Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

Fahmi said the bill would be important because he did not want to see more media practitioners lose their jobs or undertake voluntary separation schemes.

He said the government also intends to hold a meeting with tech giants such as Google, Meta and TikTok to discuss the matter.

“We see a huge impact on media organisations. Many workers have been laid off. This is something that the government cannot take lightly. I’m planning to work on the drafting of a specific bill on the return of advertising expenditure to media organisations in Malaysia,” he said. — Bernama
