Two Portuguese Settlement eateries shut over roaches and rat droppings


MELAKA: Two restaurants in the Portuguese Settlement at Ujong Pasir here have been ordered shut owing to cockroach infestations and rat droppings found on the premises, says a Melaka exco member.

State health, human resources and unity committee chairman Ngwe Hee Sem the restaurants were slapped with notices by the Health Department, which instructed them to close down for 14 days to carry out clean-up works.

He said the notices were issued on Wednesday (June 21) under the Food Act 1983.

"The shutdown was ordered after rat droppings, as well as cockroach infestations, were found on the premises.

"Furthermore, the cleanliness rating of the restaurants was found to be below the desirable rating, which raised risks of food contamination," he said on Friday (June 23).

Ngwe added that the restaurants will be allowed to resume operations If they adhere to the department's instructions.
