PAS MP told to apologise over nurses’ uniform issue

TELUK INTAN: A minister has criticised a PAS lawmaker for saying that nurses‘ uniforms were too tight, adding that the latter should apologise to the nursing fraternity.

Local Government Development Minister Nga Kor Ming said Kuantan MP Wan Razali Wan Nor should have offered more constructive criticism on how to improve the quality of public healthcare rather than disparaging nurses’ uniforms.

“We are extremely disappointed with the Opposition (for) failing to give good ideas on how to improve the health system, but instead their (nurses’) attire was criticised,” he told reporters, according to Bernama.

“We deeply regret this,” Nga said after opening the Urban Community Sustainability programme, ‘Fiesta Teluk Intan, Komuniti Bandar Dekat Dihati’ here yesterday.

Nga said the attire used by nurses and civil servants in Malaysia is in accordance with social etiquette.

He added that the government was firmly behind the nation’s nurses and civil servants.

Wan Razali, when debating the White Paper on Public Health Reforms in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday, had criticised the uniforms of female government nurses as too tight and not syariah-compliant.

He urged the Health Ministry to review their attire and to allow clinics and hospitals to freely choose their own uniforms.
