Penang assembly to dissolve on June 28 to pave way for state polls, says CM

GEORGE TOWN: The state government will dissolve the state legislative assembly on June 28 to pave the way for the state elections, says Chow Kon Yeow.

The Chief Minister said he will present the matter to Penang Governor Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak soon.

"We have decided that the date for the dissolution (of the state assembly) will be on June 28 and will meet the Governor to propose the matter," he said during a press conference on Thursday (June 8).

Prior to this Chow had said that the state government will dissolve the state legislative assembly during the last two weeks of June.

The six states – Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah, Penang, Selangor and Negri Sembilan – did not dissolve their state assemblies to hold state polls along with parliamentary ballots in the 15th General Election on Nov 19, 2022.

The Election Commission had said that the six states should consider holding the polls simultaneously, adding that holding it together would cost RM450mil.

The Selangor state assembly is set to automatically dissolve on June 26 and elections must be held within 60 days by Aug 26.

The Kelantan state assembly will automatically dissolve on June 28, Terengganu (July 1), Negri Sembilan (July 2), Kedah (July 4) and Penang (Aug 2).
