Suspect arrested for possessing illicit cigs, liquor in Muar house raid


MUAR: Police have arrested a 56-year-old man for allegedly possessing illicit cigarettes and untaxed liquor worth more than RM100,000 at Parit Jawa here.

Muar OCPD Asst Comm Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz said the arrest was made during a raid on a house at Sri Menanti on Wednesday (May 17) at 12.10am.

“The operation was carried out by the General Operations Force (GOF) and the Muar district police Criminal Investigations Department.

“A total of 1,631 cartons of cigarettes and 72 bottles of untaxed liquor, with an overall worth of RM103,514, were found during the inspection,” he said in a statement here on Sunday (May 21).

ACP Raiz Mukhliz said that the suspect had just worked at the syndicate for one week, which had been in operation for more than a month.

“Background checks revealed that the suspect has a record of various offences.

“The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967 for smuggling untaxed goods, which carries a fine of not less than 10 times the value of the goods or RM100,000, whichever is higher, for the first offence upon conviction,” he added.
