KING of Mandopop Jay Chou (pic), who is one of the best selling recording artistes in the Chinese music industry, drew criticism after posing a question on social media implying that he was the “number one”, China Press reported.
“If someone is already number one, may I know how should they change?” he asked on Instagram, referring to himself.
Chou, 44, pointed out that some artistes kept seeking changes but others, who should be trying out new things, were firm about staying the same.
Many of his fans felt that Chou should not change his musical style.
However, he was also slammed for being full of himself.
“There is no number one in the arts, there are only people who are the first to succeed in something new.
“If you are merely satisfied that your album sales have exceeded other artistes, then your art will quickly suffer a decline due to your arrogance and complacency,” someone wrote.
Unfazed, Chou hit back at his detractors and likened them to dogs.
“It is always the coldest being at the top,” he wrote, adding that he had often heard “barking noises” throughout his career.
“If it is just about being number one, so what? Isn’t that right?” he wrote.
The Taiwanese has sold 30 million records in 23 years.
