Council secretary Rajendran to take over as mayor

GEORGE TOWN: Just slightly over a year after being appointed Penang Island City Council (MBPP) secretary, Datuk A. Rajendran (pic) is now the new council mayor.

His appointment was announced by the state local government committee chairman, Jagdeep Singh Deo, at City Hall yesterday.

Rajendran will be taking over from Datuk Yew Tung Seang effective May 5.

Jagdeep thanked Yew who was appointed as mayor in 2018 for his services.

Rajendran, 60, who has been with the council for more than 30 years since joining in 1985, was appointed council secretary in January last year.

He is the second mayor of Indian descent to be appointed in more than 60 years after DS Ramanathan, who was elected as mayor in 1958.

Rajendran was earlier the engineering director of MBPP before being appointed as secretary.

He thanked Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and Jagdeep for his appointment.

“I am aware of the challenges and will do my utmost to achieve the objectives given. I appreciate the cooperation of all the council staff who have given their best in carrying out their duties,” he said in a brief statement at City Hall.
