Avoid fire hazards when setting up lights

JOHOR BARU: Those celebrating Hari Raya Aidilfitri have been advised to go easy with their light decorations at home to avoid accidents.

Acting Johor Fire and Rescue Department director Mohd Rizal Buang said with the festive season drawing nearer, many people had started to decorate their houses to avoid the last-minute rush.

“People would usually hang decorations, including lights, around and inside their homes to welcome Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

“It is not wrong to do it but they should take it easy to avoid overloading their electricity supply,” he said here yesterday.

The public, said Mohd Rizal, should also avoid extending the wiring in their homes as this could prove to be a hazard if it is not carried out professionally.

“They should also buy power sockets with Sirim certification instead of buying cheap ones that do not have any safety requirement.

“If they do not follow these steps, then they are putting their homes at risk of a short circuit, which could lead to a fire,” he said.
