KUALA LUMPUR: The implementation of an open payment system at toll booths will involve the cooperation of three ministries, says Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub.
The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister said that discussions with the Transport Ministry and Works Ministry are well underway.
"All ministries will be engaging with users, stakeholders and industry players under their ministry. We will work to ensure that any system changes are implemented in a proper manner in due time," he said
Salahuddin said this at a press conference after launching convenience store chain 99 Speed Mart's Hari Raya promotion campaign Payung Rahmah initiative on Thursday (March 23).
He added that the government would prioritise implementing the open payment system along the North-South Expressway first before implementing it at all toll booths across the country.
On March 21, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi announced that motorists would be allowed to pay toll using credit or debit cards on five roads by September.
He said the open system was among the early initiatives for a switch to the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) system, which will be implemented in phases by the third quarter of 2024.
Prior to this, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the Touch ‘n Go monopoly on highway toll collection system would be addressed.
