East African bloc moves to expedite implementation of regional e-commerce strategy

DAR ES SALAAM, May 12 (Xinhua) -- The East African Community (EAC) said on Monday that it has resolved to accelerate the effective implementation of the EAC E-commerce Strategy to enable the region to achieve significant gains in digital transformation.

The EAC said in a statement that the decision was made during a meeting held in the Ugandan capital of Kampala on May 8-9, which validated the action plan for harmonizing e-transaction legislation and updating the monitoring and evaluation tool that tracks the implementation of the EAC E-commerce Strategy.

The statement said the strategy, adopted on July 12, 2022, serves as a blueprint to foster a vibrant, secure, and inclusive e-commerce environment in East Africa, aiming to integrate member states into the global digital economy.

The strategy's core objective is to establish a single digital market within the EAC, where businesses and consumers can seamlessly transact across borders, according to the statement.

The statement added that the harmonized legal environment, advanced through the validated e-transaction action plan, will reduce regulatory friction and increase trust and compliance in digital transactions.
