Arrest warrant issued for Bukit Payong rep for missing Election Court hearing

PETALING JAYA: An arrest warrant was issued by the Terengganu Election Court for Mohd Nor Hamzah for failing to appear to testify at the Election petition hearing for the Marang parliamentary seat.

The order was issued by High Court Judge Datuk Hassan Abdul Ghani who was sitting as an Election Judge after the petitioner's lawyer, Muhammad Amin Othman requested an arrest warrant be issued against the Bukit Payong assemblyman.

During the proceedings on Tuesday (March 14), Hassan had ordered Mohd Nor, who is also Terengganu Human Development, Dakwah and Information Committee chairman, to appear again in court Thursday (March 16) to continue giving his testimony.

However, Mohd Nor failed to appear in court and the hearing for the Marang election petition will continue on March 19.

The Terengganu Election Court on Feb 12 rejected the initial objection put forward by PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang to cancel the 15th General Election (GE15) result petition for the Marang parliamentary seat filed by Barisan Nasional's candidate.

Hassan then set March 6 to 21 to hear the petition.

On Jan 3, Terengganu Umno filed a petition to cancel the GE15 results for the Kuala Terengganu, Marang and Kemaman parliamentary seats.

The petition was filed in the Kuala Terengganu High Court in accordance with the Election Offences Act 1954.

Terengganu Umno liaison board chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Said said the petition was filed amidst allegations that PAS had bribed voters by distributing aid money given by the state government on Nov 15 to 17, 2022, a few days before GE15 through the i-Pencen, i-Belia and i-Siswa programmes.
