PUTRAJAYA: Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is among several people who will be called in by police to have their statements recorded over alleged defamation of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Putrajaya OCPD Asst Comm A. Asmadi Abdul Aziz confirmed that police were in the process of contacting the Bersatu president and other witnesses.
"Investigations are ongoing and we are working on calling all those involved.
"Some have already been contacted while efforts are being made to call the others, as some are involved in the ongoing Parliament meeting," he said when contacted on Tuesday (March 14).
On Monday (March 13), ACP A. Asmadi said police had opened a defamation probe under Section 500 of the Penal Code.
The investigation followed a report lodged by the political secretary to the Finance Minister, Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim, against Muhyiddin over his statement about planned prosecution against him using enforcement agencies to achieve political ends. Muhammad Kamil was quoted as saying the report was made after finding Muhyiddin's statement was defamatory and could create a negative perception on the leadership of Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister.
He had also said that based on statements issued by Anwar, the government under his leadership would not interfere in any investigation or action by the authorities.
Muhammad Kamil said the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has the right to investigate any individual in line with the agency's status as an independent body.
