Floods: Many volunteers needed to help in post-flood clean up, says Johor exco member

JOHOR BARU: Johor will need many volunteers to help out in cleaning operations due to the floods, says Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor.

The state housing and local government committee chairman added that the state government, through local councils, has instructed SWM Environment Sdn Bhd and Johor Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) to do the cleaning at flood-hit areas.

“This is a corporate social responsibility where they will do the cleaning, including in areas outside local councils’ jurisdictions that have also been flooded.

“So far, more than 100,000 tonnes of garbage has been collected and SWM Environment workers are working overtime to do the cleaning,” he added.

Mohd Jafni said this when met after launching a property gallery at JB Sentral here on Tuesday (March 7).

He added that besides mobilising the state’s volunteer arm, Southern Volunteers, the government has also mobilised local council staff to help with the cleaning operation.

“Local councils from districts that are not badly affected by the floods will help out at flooded locations. We need more volunteers to do the cleaning work,” he said.

Mohd Jafni encouraged non-governmental organisations and other groups to become volunteers to help the flood victims get back on their feet.

He said besides becoming volunteers, the public can also donate items such as water jets, brushes and pails to help with the operation.

“We also need many other things such as diapers, comforters and stoves to donate to the victims who have lost everything because of the floods,” he added.
