KUALA LUMPUR: Bersatu is appealing to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to lift the freeze on its accounts as the party requires funds to manage itself and prepare for the upcoming state polls.
"Our accounts are frozen and it has been more than a month plus and of course, it has affected the way we manage the party," said Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin at the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex here on Tuesday (Feb 21).
"I have appealed through the letter written by Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin, our secretary-general, to the MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki to unfreeze it.
"Just to be fair, because we like any other political party, we require whatever funds we have to manage the party and in preparation for the elections in the future," added the former prime minister.
On the party’s chances at the upcoming state elections in view of the corruption charges surrounding its leaders, Muhyiddin said he would leave that to the people.
Bersatu’s accounts were frozen by the MACC in an investigation into RM300mil the party is said to have received.
Muhyiddin and other top party leaders came to the court on Tuesday to show support to information chief Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan who was slapped with two charges of corruption.
Muhyiddin arrived at the court complex at 8.58am, accompanied by other party senior leaders including secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin, vice-presidents Datuk Seri Ronald Kiandee and Datuk Radzi Jidin as well as youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal.
