Stop the ‘witch hunt’ against opposition leaders, Hamzah tells govt

KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin has appealed to the government to stop the “witch hunt” against opposition leaders.

The Larut MP said the government's intention to create unity among the people must be based on sincerity and wisdom.

He pointed out that such efforts should not be based on ill-intention against those who oppose the government.

"Unfortunately, the witch-hunting under the current government against their political opponents has not ended.

"So many allegations and baseless slander were thrown.

"God-willing, we will continue to criticise and give our input responsibly and at the same time will give our support to the good proposals under the administration of the 10th Prime Minister," he said while debating the Royal Address in Parliament on Tuesday (Feb 14).

Referring to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s officiating speech, Hamzah said that the King’s message should be heeded by all parties, regardless of their political loyalties.

"(The King’s) decree that a stable nation can only be achieved through cooperation between the government and opposition is something that all MPs can agree on.

"That is why the government must do something to build the people's confidence. Create trust and not disunity among us," he said.

Hamzah added that all the inputs and suggestions were made to help the people and to make sure that the country remained on the right track.

"So, as long as we can last, we will do whatever to continue our struggle.

"We will continue to defend the country, the race and religion," he added.

Hamzah, who was also a Cabinet minister under the previous government, claimed credit for the successes and the improvements achieved by the country.
