Choosing charity over luxury

Helping those in need: Kali donated two dialysis machines worth a total of RM80,000 to a dialysis centre using money from the sale of a piece of land he owned.

KUALA LUMPUR: He earns very little as a cleaner at a dialysis centre, but he has a really big heart.

Identified only as Kali, a man from Perlis donated two dialysis machines worth a total of RM80,000 to a dialysis centre using money from the sale of a piece of land that he owned.

“Kali is an extraordinary person. Most people would have a lot of needs, but he chose to prioritise others,” said Izhar Azimat, the property agent who helped Kali with the land sale.

“He leads a very simple life. He has no car, just a motorcycle.”

Kali, who is in his 50s, uses the motorcycle to get to his workplace at a dialysis centre.

Izhar said he had previously suggested that Kali buy a second-hand car. His response? “I can wear a raincoat when it rains while I am riding the bike.”

This was related by Izhar to mStar, The Star’s Malay language portal.

Izhar said Kali had voiced his intention early last year to donate the dialysis machines, adding that the latter had been working at the dialysis centre for a long time.

“He has seen countless people, young and old, who need treatment. He was very moved, so he wanted to make the donation,” Izhar said.

Kali’s land was sold last year for a six-figure sum.

Despite getting the huge sum, Izhar said Kali did not quit his cleaning job, which had provided for him over the years.

“To me, he is incredible. Not only did he use a big chunk of his land sale money for the community, but he remains loyal to his job as a cleaner,” said Izhar, who declined to reveal more about Kali’s background.
