Bling ring: Online jewellery racket busted, four nabbed

PETALING JAYA: Police have busted an online scam syndicate that sold nonexistent jewellery to its victims.

Police secretary Deputy Comm Datuk Norsiah Mohd Saaduddin said the group was arrested in raids in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor on Thursday (Jan 26).

Four suspects were arrested aged between 26 and 45, including a woman permanent resident, she said in a statement on Sunday (Jan 29)

The suspects detained included the mastermind and mule account holder, DCP Norsiah added.

"It is believed that the syndicate was operating since the middle of last year. It would create groups on Telegram and Instagram to promote jewellery (to potential) victims.

"Interested victims would then be contacted and told to deposit money into certain accounts. But when payment has been made, the victims would not receive any jewellery," she said.

It is believed that at least six cases linked to the group have been solved, with losses amounting to RM17,100.
