Wee: MCA to support unity govt

KUALA LUMPUR: Despite having no representatives in the Cabinet, MCA will act in line with the federal administration as part of the unity government, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

“The party has already decided. We are part of the unity government. This has been agreed upon at the leadership level.

“Even though we are not in the Cabinet, we will support the unity government in line with what has been decided,” the MCA president told a press conference after the 69th annual general assembly (AGM) yesterday.

Asked whether MCA had discussed the confidence vote that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim would face in Parliament today, Dr Wee said the party had made a decision.

On the AGM being held behind closed doors, he said it was not the first time as the same was carried out in 2018.

“We discussed many issues including the party’s direction after the 15th General Election and measures to improve and move forward,” he said.

A total of 1,033 delegates attended the AGM which also saw 18 resolutions tabled and unanimously passed.

Among them were MCA heeds the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s decree and supports the unity government to allow for political stability and a conducive environment towards economic recovery.

This call was adopted as part of five main resolutions related to party affairs, politics, economy, government and education.

Under the party affairs, it called the party’s two elected MPs, three Senators and seven assemblymen to play their roles, adhere to principles and voice out for the people without fear or favour.

The general assembly vowed to strengthen the party’s cadre training, reignite the spirit of multiculturalism and carry out an in-depth evaluation of the party’s performance in GE15 so that strategic reforms could be implemented to regain support from the people.

It also advocated moderation and diversity in the governance of Malaysia to lead the people forward while safeguarding liberties, democracy and upholding the Federal Constitution.

The general assembly also pledged unwavering commitment to establish the proper mechanism within MCA and BN to combat graft and abuse of power.

It called upon all political parties to denounce hate politics and censure parties which stir up racial hatred to win votes as such acts will sow seeds of extremism and harm Malaysia’s multiracial society.

The party also supported amendments to the Constitution that enable children born overseas to Malaysian mothers who were married to foreign spouses, to receive Malaysian citizenship automatically.

In addition, the general assembly voted in favour of the government to continue pushing for institutional reforms, including the Political Funding Bill, separation of the Public Prosecutor’s role from the Attorney-General, the appointment of key national positions to be vetted by a Parliamentary Select Committee and open tender to ensure transparency and integrity.

Under economy, the party called on the government to continue key public infrastructure projects such as the KL-Singapore High-Speed Rail and the East Coast Rail Link to boost economic development.

As for education, it urged the government to uphold its commitment to provide at least RM40mil annually in matching grant to the Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology for the advancement of education involving students of all races.
