Social media influencer detained over firearms violation

PETALING JAYA: A social media influencer was detained after a video of herself shooting guns at a firing range without permit was uploaded on her social media account.

In a statement on Thursday (Dec 8), Petaling Jaya deputy police chief Supt Ku Mashariman Ku Mahmood said the police were notified of the incident on Wednesday (Dec 7) after a clip of the shooting was uploaded onto Instagram and TikTok.

"Based on the information gathered, a police team arrested a 41-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman on Wednesday night. A Glock 19 handgun, one bullet casing, 12 live bullets, a membership card to the Selangor Shooting Association and a handphone were seized during the arrest," he said.

Sources confirmed that the uploader was among the two arrested by the police.

Supt Ku said the case was being investigated under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, and the Firearms Act 1960.
