BUTTERWORTH: Four patients underwent coronary angioplasty procedures at Hospital Seberang Jaya (HSJ) on Wednesday (Nov 4), the first day its new heart treatment services were introduced.
Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said they were among eight patients that day, marking HSJ as the first district hospital in Peninsular Malaysia to offer angiogram and coronary angioplasty services for adult patients.
"This is a historic achievement for the country's public healthcare system," he said in a social media post on Thursday (Nov 5).
The hospital is now equipped with an Invasive Cardiology Laboratory featuring a modern angiography system and electrophysiology equipment, as well as five Coronary Care Unit (CCU) beds and 15 Coronary Rehabilitation Ward (CRW) beds.
Dzulkefly said the expanded services would shorten waiting times and reduce the need for referrals to Penang Hospital.
"The Health Ministry aims to develop HSJ into a major cardiovascular referral centre for the northern region, with plans to expand its capacity to handle complex cardiology cases and cardiothoracic surgery by mid-2027," he said.
He also congratulated the hospital's cardiology specialists, nurses and staff, and thanked the Prime Minister for the Madani Government's support in bringing faster and better-quality heart treatment closer to the people.
