KUCHING: Former Lubok Antu MP Datuk William Nyallau Badak has quit Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) to support Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS).
He said his decision was made in the interest of a strong and united Sarawak under GPS.
"I have already handed over my resignation letter to the PSB secretary-general and a copy has been forwarded to the party's president.
"With a heart for Sarawak and an open mind, I wish to emphasise the importance of the unity of Sarawakians," he said in a statement on Tuesday (Nov 8).
Nyallau served two terms as Lubok Antu MP from 2008 to 2018 under Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS), a component party of GPS.
In 2018, he was dropped by PRS from defending the seat and then sacked for not abiding by the party's decision.
He joined PSB in 2019 and was fielded by the party in last December's Sarawak state election to contest in the Batang Ai seat, where he lost.
Nyallau said the state election results showed that the people strongly supported GPS as they saw the importance of unity for Sarawak.
"I have thus come to the conclusion that in order to protect our interests, Sarawakian unity is of utmost importance.
"Under the leadership of Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg together with Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah, GPS has been developing Sarawak well for the benefit of the people.
"As such, I have decided to quit PSB to support GPS. Together, we can build a stronger Sarawak and fight for our rights," he said.
