PASIR GUDANG: A metal plating factory in Tanjung Langsat here has been slapped with an equipment operation detention order after it was found to be polluting the air.
The Environment Department (DOE) said it carried out an operation at the factory on Tuesday (Oct 11) involving 10 enforcement officers from its Pasir Gudang branch and state headquarters.
"Action has been taken against the factory under Section 38(1)(a) of the Environmental Quality Act 1974 due to the release of significant pollution.

"Air and effluent control devices at the factory were not working and failed to operate properly and there were areas of the production process operating without control devices.
"Scheduled waste was not properly managed under the Environmental Quality (Clean Air) Regulations 2014, Environmental Quality Regulations Environmental (Industrial Effluent) 2009 and Environmental Quality (Scheduled Waste) Regulations 2005," the DOE said in a statement on Thursday (Oct 13).
It said action was taken to stop the pollution from continuing and the factory had been instructed to take remedial action during the detention order period.

It added that effluent and scheduled waste sampling was conducted for further action.
"Industrial premises are reminded to always comply with the requirements of the Environmental Quality Act 1974 and its Regulations.
"Strict action will be taken if there is an offence of polluting the environment," the DOE added.
