KUALA LUMPUR: Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Azhar Azizan Harun has rejected a motion filed by Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to discuss the country's cost of living crisis and the weakening ringgit.

He said the matter was not urgent as such issues will be discussed in great detail during this sitting.

"Such questions have been repeatedly discussed in the Dewan Rakyat.

"In fact, there are already two questions related to the matter during the Question and Answer session with eight questions for the Minister in charge of Economy.

"In fact, we will be discussing Budget 2023 in this session and I am sure it will be debated by the MPs," he said in Parliament on Monday (Oct 3).

Anwar (PH-Port Dickson) then stood up to argue that the issues raised in the Budget 2023 debate will be about projections for next year and not the current situation.

He added that not all MPs would be able to debate on the issue due to the limited time.

"The issue of cost of living should be our focus and I am afraid that people might question Parliament," said Anwar.

However, the Speaker insisted that the motion was rejected and such issues will be debated in detail especially after Budget 2023 is tabled.
