Missing helicopter is eighth incident involving aircraft since 2015


PETALING JAYA: The incident involving a helicopter that went missing near Bidor, Perak is one of the few aircraft-related mishaps that have occurred over the past few years.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) confirmed that a helicopter had lost contact with the Kuala Lumpur Air Traffic Control Centre (KLATCC) at 12.16pm on Sunday (Sept 11).

The helicopter is a Eurocopter EC120B and attempts to contact the pilot of the helicopter that went missing near Bidor were unsuccessful, with radar showing that the aircraft suffered a sharp loss of altitude.

Aug 1, 2022: In the most recent aircraft incident, a 52-year-old flight instructor and retired fighter pilot was killed when his Piper 28-161 light plane crashed in Ipoh, Perak.

Fortunately, another flying instructor in the aircraft survived the crash but suffered injuries.

There have been seven other helicopter crashes since 2015.

March 24, 2021: An Airbus H125 helicopter crashed on the runway of Subang Airport, injuring two men.

Nov 8, 2020: Two G2CA-type helicopters (9M-HCA & 9M-HCB), carrying two crew members each, collided mid-air during flight training after departing from the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport, Subang.

Two former navy personnel were killed while the crew members of another aircraft survived as their helicopter (9M-HCA) managed to make an emergency landing at a nearby school.

Feb 27, 2020: A police helicopter carrying six Air Operations Force personnel crashed at the 14th Battalion Camp of the General Operation Force in Jalan Air Panas, Tawau. All six were injured.

Aug 15, 2018: A Robinson R-66 chopper crashed at the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang, injuring two pilots.

Oct 4, 2016: Fourteen military personnel were injured when a Nuri helicopter crashed on the rooftop of a building of SMK Balong in Tawau, Sabah.

May 5, 2016: Six people including former deputy plantation industries and commodities minister Tan Sri Noriah Kasnon, Kuala Kangsar MP Datuk Wan Muhammad Khair-il Anuar Wan Ahmad and Filipino pilot Captain Rudolf Rex Ragas were killed when their Eurocopter AS350 crashed in Batang Lupar, near Sebuyau, Sarawak.

April 4, 2015: Five passengers, including Rompin MP Tan Sri Dr Jamaluddin Jarjis and pilot Captain Clifford William Fournier were killed when AS3655N2 Dauphin (9M-1GB) crashed in Jalan Sungai Lalang, Kampung Pasir Baru, Semenyih, Selangor.
